Bone grafting is a common dental procedure that is used to rebuild and reinforce the jawbone. The goals of bone graft are to restore function, form, and stability to the jawbone. In most cases, a successful bone graft will improve your oral health and help preserve your natural teeth.

If you’re considering a bone graft, our knowledgeable staff can help you decide if it’s the right treatment for you.

What is a bone graft?

A bone graft is a common oral health procedure in which bone tissue is transplanted from one area of the body to another to help encourage bone regeneration. The bone graft can come from your own body, or it can come from a donor. The bone graft is used when there is inadequate bone structure to support dental implants, or there is damage from periodontal and gum disease. In some cases, the bone graft can also help to improve the appearance of your smile. The decision to have a bone graft is made by you and your oral surgeon, and it will be based on your individual needs and goals.

Bone Grafting Options

Autogenous Bone Graft

This is the most common type of bone graft material used. It is bone that comes from the patient’s own body. It is considered the best graft material because it has a lower risk of rejection, preserves bone strength, and promotes new bone formation.

Allogenic Bone Graft

An allogenic graft is a bone that comes from a donor. Allogenic bone grafts are often used for larger bone defects or when an autograft is not possible.

Allograft Bone

This graft is created using synthetic materials. It is made using collagen and other proteins. They are less likely to be rejected by the body, and they can be custom-made to fit the patient’s needs.

Xenogenic Bone Graft

This bone graft material comes from donated bones from another species, typically a cow. We sterilize and freeze-dry before using them. They can be used on their own or with other types of bone grafts.

Types of Bone Augmentation Procedures

There are several different types of bone grafting procedures, and the type of procedure used will depend on your specific needs and what other dental procedures you will need.

Socket Preservation

Socket Preservation is a bone augmentation procedure that can help to prevent bone loss after tooth extraction. The goal of socket preservation is to preserve the bone in the area of the extraction so that it can later support an implant. A bone graft is placed into the empty socket immediately after the tooth is removed. The bone graft helps to stimulate new bone growth and provides support for the surrounding tissue.

Ridge Augmentation

Ridge augmentation is done to restore the shape of your gums and bone. It’s usually done before getting dental implants. The bone graft is put in place with screws or other tiny devices. As the bone graft heals, it bonds with the natural bone.

Sinus Lift

This is typically done when there is not enough bone in the upper jaw, which can make it difficult to place dental implants. During a sinus lift, bone graft material is used to build up the bone in the area where the implant will be placed. This helps to provide a strong foundation for the implant, and it also helps to prevent implant failure.
